Girding the Loins of Our Minds

“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” I Peter 1:13

In I Peter 1:13, we find the directive to get ready mentally for service. Effectiveness in any endeavor requires, in loose terms, your mind to be in it. The preparation consists of eliminating unprofitable thought patterns. Patterns imply a set manner of doing or responding for a length of time. Therefore, the fortress of unhealthy and negative thoughts is built over time. Likewise, mastering one’s thought life is not a victory that is gained over night. It requires continuous practice governed by a steadfastness to be influenced by the Holy Spirit from within rather than outer circumstances. It consists of choosing over and over again to maintain a healthy thought process. It’s a discipline we must venture to cultivate if we are to succeed at subjecting our thoughts to the lordship of Jesus Christ as encouraged in 2 Corinthians 10:5.

“We break down every thought and proud thing that puts itself up against the wisdom of God. We take hold of every thought and make it obey Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NLV)

We have to strive each day, in fact every moment, to make your thoughts obey Christ. Thoughts subject to the lordship of Jesus Christ causes us to mimic the Lord in all we say and do as well as what we think. What we think about transforms into what we say, and what we say materializes into what we do.

“On our own, wrangling our thoughts is a hopeless task. However, in collaboration with the Holy Spirit, the impossible becomes possible”_ASA
