Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, … think on these things.” Philippians 4:8
What is true? How do we know something is true? What makes a thought true? These questions we ponder to determine what is true. While researching for this blog, I came across the HSD Institute webpage which proclaims four types of truth can be discerned by a person for any given event.
- Objective Truth is based can be seen
- Normative Truth is based what a group of people concedes is true
- Subjective Truth is based on a person’s unique worldview, an individual’s perception of the world
- Complex Truth supports the above three in consideration of which truth is best depending upon the situation. (https://www.hsdinstitute.org/resources/four-truths.html)
In essence, from HSD Institute’s perspective, truth leans toward being relative. Relative truth offers no solid foundation to based what is true. If this is the case, thinking on things that are true can be become a futile exercise.
I propose a fifth truth, known as, the Word of God. The Word of God is the the Holy Bible, the Scriptures inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16). It’s infallible, which means we can trust God’s Word as being true. Lastly, it’s inerrant, despite God’s employment of men to put in writing what He wanted to communicate, it is without error. As we seek to know God through the study of His Word, we equip our minds with what is true. Moreover, we increase in knowledge regarding what is not true. To think true thoughts sets us free from bondage as a result of circumstances or to the will of others
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, “ 2 Timothy 3:16
