“If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness. Proverbs 20:20 ESV

The act of cursing someone is rooted in hatred for the person, object or situation being cursed. When one individual curses another, the desired outcome is to dishonor the person in a manner that cripples. Normally, the action is towards those who are distance in relation and thought. It’s the lack of love that allows the act of cursing to thrive, while the present of love blocks the flow of cursing. In the moment, the one who curses another may perceive only harm the one who is being cursed. However, it is the cursor who is greatly being diminished by the act.
Cursing one’s parents can be considered a spiritual suicide. In the nature, suicide is when a person physically terminates one’s own life. In the same fashion, when we curse our parents, Proverbs 20:20 teaches the light God has given us, our connection with God, is put out. As a result of darkness, we no longer are able to discern the leading of the Lord and experience God’s favor. In essence, dishonoring one’s parents causes an individual to become prey and positioned for life of ongoing decline.
