Jehovah Rapha – “The Lord Who Heals”

TELL GOD WHERE IT HURTS…
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3 NIV

Have you considered that a specific physical ailment can be the result of the need for healing of a heartache? Webster’s describes brokenheartedness as extreme sadness due to sorrow or heartache.1 It is rooted in the experience of loss.  Loss can be material or immaterial, the result of the death of a loved one, or even the loss of self within a failing relationship. One can call it a disabling state of being, a low place in a person’s life. A common progression of hurt occurs when the heart hurts in response to loss. Heartaches lead to mind hurts. After the mind enters the arena of hurt,  the body proceeds to ache. Nevertheless, Psalm 147:3 gives hope by informing us that brokenheartedness can be cured by God. God tends to the wounds we incurred during our battles with brokenheartedness. We can embrace God’s healing virtues when we come to realize our need for recouping from loss.

Beyond acknowledging the need for healing, a strong foundation in the Word of God helps us remain stable in the midst of any size of hurt. It is through God’s Word that we are comforted and find the strength not to wallow in our hurts. As we prioritize spending time with God’s Word, we are choosing to spend time with God. During these intentional moments in His Presence, God builds and gives us inner tools for the next steps to overcome inner hurts. However, when we minimize the importance of spending time with God, we set ourselves up to be ill-equipped on the road ahead, even the very next moment in the present. I discovered that intentionally choosing to spend time with God helps me to keep my woes at bay, allowing the spirit of gratitude to rule in my heart and mind.

He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.” Exodus 13:26
