"In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."
John 16:33
Church hurt is paradox considering its primary attribute is to be an extension of God’s love. I dare not say no one initially goes to church expecting to be harmed in any way. For the most part, we are seeking encouragement, guidance, and fellowship through the worship of God. Unfortunately, too often, church members are wounded emotionally, spiritually, or psychologically by leaders and other members. Unfortunately, the hurt mutes the whispers of God’s love, leaving His plans and purpose in doubt in our minds when facing the pain caused by church hurt. Church-related hurt encompasses judgment, cliques, abuse of power, and exclusion by leaders or members, but is not limited to these. Hurt can also arise when we believe the opportunities denied within the church are the only avenue to fulfill God’s destiny in our lives. The strength of the “church hurt” flows from the inability to separate the flaws of mankind from God’s love and goodness. Therefore, the outcome of church hurt can lead to bitterness, negative questioning of God, or a drastic departure from the faith.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God,
to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28
In my own journey, I have had to endure the pains of church hurt more than I care to mention. My initial reactions were to abandon the ship, quickly removing myself from the source of pain. However, through much practice, I came to understand God’s movement in every situation. He uses the pain of church hurt to conform us into the image of Jesus Christ, fulfilling His divine purpose for us. God is active in our suffering and hardships, mingling them with intangible blessings, earthly comforts, and prosperity to bring about His will in every area of our lives. During my times of fellowship with God, He reminds me of who He created me to be, despite when others dismiss my worth. Although He allows the hurt in the church, God gives us the grace to weather the storm, no matter how great it is.

“Even in unfavorable circumstances, God works in mysterious ways
to refine His people for His purpose.”_ASA
