True Love and Obedience to God’s Commandments

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14:21

True love excels beyond a mere verbal declaration. Along with verbal expression, genuine love demands a display of the sentiment it conveys. A parent striving to meet the needs of a child, a friend staying by your side at all times, particularly in the challenging moments, and the faithfulness of a spouse honoring one’s vows when no one is looking. These are sample actions of love in motion to prove the substance of the uttered words “I love you”. It’s evidence beyond the words that can’t be denied.

The depth of one’s love towards God is proven in keeping His commandments. Attending ritual ceremonies, attending church every Sunday, and volunteering at the homeless shelter are good practices. However, living out the Word of God entails a great deal of the transformation of our inner beings. The practice of forgiveness, especially to the undeserving(Ephesians 4:32), the decision to turn one’s back on sin and walk in humility (2 Chronicles 7:14), and the commitment to trust God with one’s life (Proverbs 3:5-6) are illustrations of loving God with our whole beings. Loving God requires abandoning oneself to allow God to lead the way. The evidence viewed as the fruit of the Spirit is displayed in our daily lives (Galatians 5:22-23). Moreover, even as we surrender to God’s will, He shows us how to love Him.
